Dall’8 al 12 Agosto ogni anno si svolge una festa in onore del patrono S. Sisto, morto martire nel 128. Si dice che il suo corpo fu gettato in sepolto sull’ Esquilino, per servire da cibo agli avvoltoi, com’era consuetudine a Roma, in quel tempo, per i cadaveri dei condannati a morte. Ma i devoti fedeli riuscirono a dare una degna sepoltura al Santo presso il cimitero Vaticano, accanto a S. Pietro. Si narra che nel 1132, affinché ponesse fine all’atroce pestilenza che si era abbattuta sulla sua contea alifana, il corpo del santo fu trasportato da Roma ad Alife in un’arca di legno. Attualmente le reliquie sono conservate in una Cappella fuori dalle mura della città. La festa si svolge dall’ 8 al 12 Agosto. Il giorno 8 il busto d’argento del patrono, tolto dalla propria Cappella, è collocato sul trono costruito per l’ occasione sul coro della Cattedrale. Qui si svolgono novene e litanie in musica eseguite dai fedeli della città. Il giorno successivo il comitato della festa si reca in giro per le case per raccogliere le offerte; durante la giornata seguono concerti musicali di bande nelle varie piazze della città. Il giorno 10 agosto si svolge una gran fiera a Porta Napoli e vari intrattenimenti musicali. L’ 11 Agosto, nella serata, tra spari di granate e razzi ha luogo la tradizionale processione che trasporta il busto del Santo dalla Cattedrale alla Cappella fuori le mura; al rientro della processione viene celebrata una Santa Messa. The Festival of S. Sisto
Every year, from the 8th up to the 12th of August, in a place called Alife (Caserta), a festival to celebrate Saint Sisto takes place; this Saint died as a martyr in the year 128. It is said that his unburied body was threw upon the Esquilino mountain in order to feed the vultures; at that time the Romans used to do that for the corpses of people sentenced to death. But some believers succeeded in giving him a Christian burial in the Vatican cemetery, next to S. Peter. It is said that, in 1132, the Saint’s body was carried from Rome to Alife in a wooden ark in order to put an end to a terrible plague spread in his county. Relics are currently kept in a chapel outside the town’s walls. The festival takes place from the 8th up to the 12th of August. On the 8th of August, the silver bust of the Patron is taken out from the chapel and then it is put on the throne. The next day the festival’s committee go to the houses in order to collect the offerings; during the day, many music concerts are performed in different places of the town. On the 10th of August, an important fête at Porta Napoli, with various music shows, occurs. On the 11th of August, during the evening, there is the traditional procession that carry the Saint’s bust from the cathedral up to the chapel outside the town’s walls; when the procession ends, a Mass is celebrated.
