The first edition of the spectacular Carnival of Capua goes back to 1886 thanks to the unification of two different carnivals, the one for gentlemen- always performed in private halls – and the popular one, always performed in the streets. People from Capua still remember the carnival arranged in the first years of ‘900 by the committees presided over by chevaliers Francesco La Manna and Vincenzo Pizzolo.I n that occasion, the whole population wore the traditional costume called costumedel “Dominio” (domination costume) and participated in dancing competitions. People took part in the so-called “cicuzze” (lit.: pointed pebbles), satiric verses publicly played or sung in the Piazza dei Giudici (a square). The tradition to make a parade of allegoric floats, to decorate coaches and to prepare a fancy dress parade goes back to that time. The Piazza dei Giudici and il Corso Appio are the places where kings, who were visiting Capua were welcomed with solemnity. These are also the places where magnificent processions and royal embassies were given hospitality and, still, here is where the fancy dress parades occur, together with the allegoric floats and the carnival shows that last six days, from Thursday up to Shrove Tuesday. The Carnival is opened by the mayor or the mayor’s representative. Once one of them publicly hands over the town keys to the Carnival king, he gives the go-ahead to a sequence of performances: Caribbean dancing, masked balls, disco dance, tarantella, concerts, a Brazilian show, school exhibitions and cabaret. Some traditional engagement sare always in the programme: the royal parade with traditional costumes, the Carnival King proclamation and the Court exhibition recur on Thursday, Sunday and Tuesday afternoon; the carnival parade on Monday afternoon; the representation of the Carnival King’s funeral procession together with the “burning of the catafalque” and the pyrotechnic show on the last evening of Shrove Tuesday.
