Il giorno 3 Agosto Cusano Mutri (BN) è sede di una processione penitenziale molto commovente in nome di una reliquia detta Spina Santa. La chiesa di S. Giovanni Battista di Cusano Mutri possiede una Spina da sempre ritenuta provenire dalla corona di Cristo. E’ lunga circa due centimetri e mezzo, la punta è erosa e il colore è quello del legno invecchiato, più chiaro sul lato posteriore. La tradizione vuole che la reliquia abbia compiuto diversi miracoli,come ad esempio quando il 3 Agosto 1805, poiché era ancora in atto il terremoto cominciato il 26 Luglio, si fece una processione di penitenza, trasportando la "Spina Santa", al "Monte Calvario". Lì giunti, mentre si impartiva la benedizione con detta reliquia, la punta di questa divenne bianca, come se stesse per fiorire. Fu addirittura portata all'ombra, ma il prodigio non cessò. La stessa mattina esso si replicò, quando venne nuovamente impartita la benedizione davanti alla cappella di S. Vito al "Campitello". La Spina di Cusano Mutri, ha inoltre manifestato fenomeni di"rosseggiamento" comparabili ad intrisioni di sangue vivo e "biancheggiamento" assimilabile a fioritura. Il 5 Giugno per la festività della Corona del Signore viene celebrata una specifica messa. V.N

The "Holy Thorn"
On the 3rdof August Cusano Mutri (Benevento) becomes the place where, in the name of the Holy Thorn, a penitential procession occurs. The Saint John Baptist’s church in Cusano Mutri owns a thorn that is considered belonging to Christ’s crown. It is two centimetre slong, the top of it is eroded and it has an old wood colour, lighter in the back. The tradition says that the thorn made some miracles; one of them occurred on the 3rd of August 1805. The earth quake, started on the 26th of July, was still in course and so a penitential procession was made by carrying the Holy Thorn to the “Monte Calvario”. Once they arrived there, while the benediction was taking place, the top of the thorn became white, as it was about to blossom. It was also put into the shadow, but the miracle did not end. In the course of the same morning, when an other benediction was made in front of the chapel of San Vito at the “Campitello”, the miracle happened again. The Thorn of Cusano Mutri also showed some phenomena of reddening, which looks like real blood, and phenomena of whitening, which looks like the blossoming. On the 5th of June, on the occasion of the festival of “God’s Crown”, a solemn mass is celebrated.
