Ogni anno il 24 Agosto ad Altavilla Irpina (Avellino) viene ricordato con una toccante manifestazione S. Pellegrino, martire cristiano al tempo dell’ imperatore Comodo (192 d. C.). Il Santo di Altavilla ha determinato addirittura una speciale categoria di devoti, denominati Battenti, che il 24 Agosto diventano protagonisti di uno spettacolo votato alla devozione. I Battenti hanno prima di tutto una loro divisa, che consiste in una camicia e in un pantalone bianco. Completa la divisa una larga fascia, rossa a tracolla oppure intorno ai fianchi, con sopra impressi l'immagine del Santo e il nome dell'associazione di appartenenza. Camminano a piedi scalzi saltellando continuamente e, quando sono in prossimità della chiesa, un suono prolungato annuncia il rituale gesto devozionale dei Battenti che si prostrano sull’asfalto bollente fino a un successivo suono di tromba, procedendo carponi e col capo chino verso il pavimento della chiesa dell’ Assunta. Portano in dono al Santo Taumaturgo grossi ceri, in segno di riconoscenza per le grazie ricevute o da impetrare. Il genitore porta con sé il figlio per iniziarlo a questa pratica rituale. Oltre al nutritissimo gruppo d’ Altavilla, partecipano a questo evento anche gruppi di battenti provenienti dalle comunità di Mugnano del Cardinale, di Monteforte Irpino, di Manocalzatí, di Montefredane, di Roccarainola, di Cimitílee di altri paesi, che il giorno 24 Agosto partecipano alla grande processione ad Altavilla, diretti al sacrario dell'instancabile e generoso S. Pellegrino. I battenti forestieri, per trovarsi nella mattinata nel paese del Santo, partono dalle loro sedi quando è ancora notte, traspari di mortaretti e saluti bene auguranti di chi rimane. Percorrono decine e decine di km di strada sempre a piedi nudi. Quando sono in prossimità di Altavilla si dispongono in doppia fila e, a ritmo di fischíetto del “capo-paranza” (colui che guida la processione), danno vita ad una passarella di devozione, che si svolge lungo il corso principale della città, tra due foltissime ali di popolo, accorso da ogni piu lontana contrada della regione. C’è di tutto: sbandieramenti, frenetici applausi, lancio di coriandoli, banda musicale. L'ultima squadra ad esibirsi è quella di Altavilla, che in segno di ospitalità dà ogni precedenza alle squadre forestiere. Questa porta in spalla un baldacchino dove è adagiata una statua di S. Pellegrino o un ragazzo abbigliato come il santo, seduto su un trono e con la testa piegata sul braccio nella posizione del dormiente. Presso l'altare di San Pellegrino, i Battenti depongono i ceri, le offerte in danaro e i propri affanni. H.S

The “Beating People” of S. Pellegrino
Saint Pellegrino is remembered through a striking celebration. He was a Christian martyr at the time of Emperor Comodo (192 A.D.). The Saint, called Saint of Altavilla, created a special category of devotees, the so-called “Battenti” (beating people), who become characters of adevotion show that occurs on the 24th of August. The Battenti wear a particular uniform that consists in white shirt and trousers.The uniform is completed by a large red band carried on one’s shoulder or around the hips; upon the band, there are the Saint’s image and the name of the association the Battenti belong to. They walk barefoot, jumping continuously. When they arrive close to the church, a long song announces the Battenti’s ritual gesture of devotion; they lie down on the burning asphalt until the next trumpet sound, proceeding on all fours and with bent head toward the floor of the Assunta’s church. They bring some big large candles as a gift for the thaumaturgic Saint in order to thank him for the received favours or in order to ask for a grace. One of the parent take the child with him/her, to initiate the child to the ritual practice. Behinds the numerous people from Altavilla, there are also other groups of Battenti coming from the communities of Mugnano del Cardinale, Monteforte Irpino, Manocalzati, Montefredane, Roccarainola, Cimitile and from other villages; they all, on the 24th of August, take part of the big processon in Altavilla that goes to the memorial of the generous Saint Pellegrino. The foreigner Battenti, in order to meet in the morning in the Saint’s village, leave their places when is still night. They walk for many km, always barefoot. When they are about to come in Altavilla, they arrange themselves in a double line and, by following the rhythm of whistle of the “capoparanza” (the man who drives the procession), they make a parade of devotion along the main road of the village between two very big lines of people coming from the further part of the region. There are things of all sort: flagging, applauses, music band. The last performing team is the one from Altavilla; it gives precedence to the foreigners teams. The team from Altavilla takes on shoulders a canopy on which there is the San Pellegrino’s statue or a boy dressed like the Saint; he sits down a throne with the head bended on the arm as a sleeper. Beside the San Pellegrino’s altar, the Battenti put down the large candles, the money offerings and their worries.
