The annual celebrations for the Madonna della Pace of Giugliano, popularly called “Zingarella”, start on Saturday of Pentecost(1) with the traditional procession, which goes from the Cappella dell’Epitaffio up to Piazza Annunziata. The little Pietà is made of stucco mixed with argil and plaster; it represents the Madonna della Pace and ritually follows the road that, according to legend, first ran this course in 1453, when the statue was carried from some sailors up to the Chiesa dell’Annunziata. The legend tells that the simulacra, which probably has Byzantine origins, was driven by the angels on the sea waves up to Cuma, where the statue was discovered by some sailors. The legend also tells that they found the simulacra because of a two cows who kneeled in adoration. Even today, after more than 550 years, the statue of the Madonna is carried in procession. The believers, who come from some neighbouring towns, accompany the statue of the Madonna with songs and prayers to the triumphal float. This float, towed by a couple of cows richly adorned, will drive the statue to the church of the Annunziata. The whole Sunday is dedicated to religious functions; on the Pentecostal Monday, celebrations start again from the very morning. After a solemn Eucharistic ceremony, the float is carried again to the main square where many people, together with the believers and some women called “biancovestite” (white-dressed), wait for the arrival of the float before the “ascent” of the Madonna. They also want to take part to the most important moment of the festival: the angel’s flight, a representation of one of the scene of Luke’s Gospel, in which the archangel Gabriel greets Mary as the one “full of grace”. This rite comes twice: on the Pentecostal Monday andother two times on the following Sunday. Four female children represent in turn the archangel Gabriel. Each angel is hung in the air through special ropes which are tightened between the church and a building; the angel is slowly put down toward the Madonna’s simulacra. During the descent, among the astonishment and the commotion of the participants, the children sing traditional songs, recite poetry and strew petals in honour of the Madonna della Pace.
