Prima di diventare Apostolo, Martire e Santo, Andrea era un pescatore di Cafarnao. Morì a Patrasso legato a una croce disposta a "X", il 30 Novembre intorno all'anno 60, sotto l’imperatore Nerone. Il suo corpo fu poi imbalsamato e trasferito nel 357 a Costantinopoli. Probabilmente nel 1208, durante la quarta Crociata, attraverso avventurose vicende le sue reliquie giunsero ad Amalfi. Protettore dei pescatori, dei pescivendoli e di tutti coloro che hanno a che fare con la pesca, Sant’ Andrea è patrono di Amalfi. Qui la sua festa si celebra due volte l'anno: il 27 giugno ed il 30 Novembre. Quest’ultima data segna l'anniversario del miracolo che nel 1544 salvò la città di Amalfi dall'invasione del pirata Kair-Ad-Din, detto Barbarossa. Secondo una leggenda locale Sant’Andrea avrebbe impedito al pirata di sbarcare in città scatenando una fortissima tempesta nel porto di Amalfi. Da allora ogni anno, il 27 giugno, si celebra la grande festa patronale. La possente statua del santo, detta dagli amalfitani “o’viecchio” (il vecchio), è portata in processione per le strade della città da uomini vestiti di bianco appartenenti a diverse congreghe religiose. Arrivati sulla spiaggia i pescatori prendono la statua del santo e la riportano di corsa verso il Duomo, dove in segno di forza e di fede risalgono lo scalone monumentale secondo un rituale molto simile a quello praticato dai devoti per laFesta di San Matteo a Salerno. Giunti in Duomo i pescatori lasciano a Sant’Andrea offerte di pesce fresco o piccoli pesci in ferro o legno in segno di ringraziamento. Il 30 Novembre avviene il “miracolo di Sant’ Andrea”, per tanti versi molto simile al miracolo della liquefazione del sangue di San Gennaro. Dalla tomba in cui è conservato il corpo del santo, nella cripta del Duomo, fuoriesce una sostanza oleosa e miracolosa, detta “manna”. Se l’evento non si verifica, gli amalfitani si convincono che il santo sia in collera, o che qualcosa di grave stia per accadere. H.S

Festival of Saint Andrea the Patron
Before he was an Apostle, a Martyr and a Saint, Andrea was a fisherman from the small village of Cafarnao. He died in Patrasso on a “X” cross on the 30th of November in the year 60, under the Emperor Nero. His body was first embalmed and then carried to Constantinople in the year 357. In the course of the forth Crusade, probably in 1208, his relics came to Amalfi. Saint Andrea is the patron of the town and the protector of the fishermen and of all the people who are related to the fishing. His celebration occurs twice per year: on the 27th of June and on the 30th of November. The last day is the anniversary of the miracle that, in 1544, saved the town from the invasion of the pirate Kair-Ad-Din, called Barbarossa. A local legend says that Saint Andrea caused a huge storm in order to avoid for the pirate to reach the Amalfi port. Since then, on the 27th of July, an important patron festival is celebrated. The statue of the Saint, which the Amalfi people call “o’ viecchio” (the old man) is carried in procession along the town’s streets by white-dressed men belonging to different religious congregations. Once they arrived to the beach, the fishermen take the Saint’ statue and they quickly carry it to the Duomo (the cathedral), where they have to climb a great staircase to demonstrate devotion and strength. Once they reached the Duomo, the fishermen offer to the Saint little real fishes or wooden ones as a thanks.
