Ogni anno il 10 Agosto a Mugnano del Cardinale (AV) si svolge una festa in onore di Santa Filomena. Secondo la tradizione, Filomena visse nel III sec. d. C: era figlia di un re della Grecia che insieme alla moglie si era convertito al cristianesimo. Filomena fece voto di castità a 11 anni: chiesta in sposa dall'imperatore Diocleziano per motivi politici, rifiutò il matrimonio e venne imprigionata. Rinchiusa nelle carceri, dopo37 giorni le apparve la Vergine ad annunciarle che, trascorsi 40 giorni, sarebbe stata esposta a vari martiri, uscendone indenne. E così fu: esposta nuda alla flagellazione, il giorno successivo fu miracolosamente sanata; condannata al martirio delle frecce, queste tornarono indietro sugli arcieri; legatale un’ancora al collo e gettata nel Tevere, gli Angeli spezzarono la corda salvandola. Il rito in onore di S. Filomena, celebrato la seconda domenica di Agosto, ha valore fortemente identitario per il popolo di Mugnano del Cardinale, al punto che, per assistere alla manifestazione, spesso gli emigrati mugnanesi rientrano in paese. I protagonisti di questa ritualità festiva sono i “battenti”:si tratta di fedeli così chiamati per il fatto che battono continuamente i piedi a terra in modo ritmico e cadenzato. Sono scalzi e indossano un costume tradizionale costituito da canottiera e pantaloni bianchi e da una fascia rossa in vita (i colori della purezza e del martirio), annodata al fianco con la scritta S. F., in onore della Santa. I battenti, che vengono a piedi dai paesi limitrofi, arrivano in mattinata al santuario di S. Filomena, posto nella piazza principale, portando offerte come mazzi di fiori, ceri e "toselli": questi ultimi sono apparati effimeri o costruzioni simboliche di dimensioni e forme diverse, decorate con nastri, carta, conchiglie. Alcuni portano la grande statua della Santa. Il “capo paranza*” al suono di una trombetta dirige la marcia. I devoti salgono in ginocchio la scalinata di accesso al santuario, avanzando, sempre in ginocchio, o carponi, fino all'altare. Si avvicinano alla statua raffigurante la santa e si abbandonano a pianti, preghiere, invocazioni: non è raro che alcuni entrino in uno stato di trance convulsiva. A mezzogiorno si svolge la Santa messa e nel pomeriggio la processione. Il 21 Agosto, infine, si svolge una festa in onore di Pio X, che si fece promotore del culto della Santa.
* Il termine paranza deriva dalla voce meridionale paro, paio, e sta ad indicare due barche che procedono in coppia per pescare. Successivamente il termine viene usato per indicare l'equipaggio di tali imbarcazioni e, per estensione, qualsiasi compagnia, società, gruppo.V.N

The cult of Saint Filomena
Every year, on the 10th of August, in Mugnano del Cardinale (Avellino), a festival in honour of Saint Filomena occurs. According to tradition, Filomena lived in the Third Century A.D.: she was a Greek king’s daughter who, together with his wife, converted to Christianity. Filomena made a vow of chastity when she was eleven years old. Then, Constantine the Emperor proposed to her for political reasons; she refused the marriage and so she was imprisoned. After 37 years in prison, the Virgin appeared to her to announce that she would have martyred after 40 days and that she would have survived. And so it happened: she was flagellated and the day after she was miraculously healed. After that, she was condemned to the martyrdom of the arrows, but these went back to he archers. At the end, a rope was tied to her neck and she was thrown in the Tiber, but the angels cut the rope to save her.The ritual in honour of S. Filomena, which is celebrated on the second Sunday of August, got a strong identity value for the people from Mugnano del Cardinale. Indeed, many emigrants come back to town in order to take part to the ceremony. The protagonists of this festival are called “Battenti” due to the fact that they walk barefoot stamping their feet in a rhythmic way. They wear white trousers and a white shirt and a red band on the waist (the colours for purity and martyrdom).The Battenti who come fromo ther village by walking, arrive in the morning to S. FIlomena’s sanctuary, which is located in the main square of the town. They bring some offerings as flowers, candles and the “toselli”:these last are symbolic constructions of different sizes and shape sand they are adorned with ribbons, paper and sea shells. Some of them carry the Saint’s big statue.The“capo paranza”(1) drives the march by playing the trumpet. The devotees go on knees up to he sanctuary’s stairs. They walk on their knees up to the altar. They come close to the saint’s statue and then they start crying and praying. It is not rare that some of them fall intoa trance . At midday, the mass takes place and in the afternoon there is the procession. On the 21st of August, there is a festival to celebrate Pio X, who was the promoter for S. Filomena’s cult.
(1) The word paranza comes from the southern word “paro”, or paio, which indicates two boats that go on together to fishing. Lately, the term was used to indicate the boats’ crew and, in anextended meaning, any company, group or association.
