Il culto di San Michele si sviluppò a Padula durante la dominazione longobarda. Qui il santo patrono viene celebrato ogni anno con una processione che si svolge l’ultima domenica di maggio. Finoa qualche anno fa tutte le statue di santi delle chiese e delle cappelle del paese accompagnavano la statua di San Michele in processione. Negli ultimi anni, oltre ai devoti, partecipano alla processione le autorità civili e religiose, i rappresentanti delle varie congreghe religiose con gli stendardi, le donne che portano i “cinti” o le “cinte” (particolari ex voto di cera), e le sole statue della Vergine col bambino e di San Francesco. La statua del patrono sfila adorna di oggetti preziosi e di grappoli di ciliegie. Alla suggestiva processione, che percorre le anguste strade del centro storico giungendo fino alle campagne circostanti, fanno seguito i festeggiamenti laici in Piazza Umberto I con spettacoli canori e pirotecnici. I devoti di San Michele rinnovano il culto la III domenica di giugno quando si recano in processione nella località detta Grottelle dove esiste una chiesa rupestre dedicata al Santo. V.N

Saint Michele's cult
Saint Michele’s cult began in Padula during the Longobards’ domination. Here is the place where the Patron is celebrated every year with a procession that occur on the last Sunday of May. Some years ago all the Saints’statues of the village’s churches were going in procession together with the Saint Michele’s statue, but in the last years there are only the statue of the Virgin with the Child and the Saint Francesco’s one. Many people take part to the procession, like religious and civil authorities, representatives of various religious congregations and women who take special waxen ex voto called “cinti”. The Patron’s statue is adorned with jewels and cherry grapes. After the procession, the lay celebration takes place in the main square, Piazza Umberto I. Saint Michele’s devotees renew the cult on the third Sunday of June by going in procession to a place called Grottelle where there is a church consecrated to the Saint.
