La seconda domenica di Maggio si svolge a Rutino (Sa) la festa del Volo dell’Angelo. Tale rituale festivo è caratterizzato da una complessa rappresentazione teatrale che ha come perno centrale la lotta tra l’Angelo e il Diavolo. L'angelo è rappresentato da un bambino, che viene scelto a seconda di determinate caratteristiche, come il peso, che non deve superare i quaranta chili, e la voce, che deve essere acuta e melodiosa. Il giorno della festa il bambino scelto indossa il costume tipico: una sottoveste bianca ricamata, un vestitino azzurro bordato con ricami di fili d'oro e con una bilancia, simbolo di giustizia, ricamata sul petto, calzamaglie con strisce azzurre, le ali, un paio di sandali bianchi, la bionda parrucca ricciuta, l'elmo col sottogola e uno scudo legato al braccio sinistro e, infine, la spada, consegnata al bambino-angelo da due militari dell'Arma dei Carabinieri in alta uniforme. Una volta che il bambino-angelo è pronto, si reca in chiesa, dove viene celebrata una funzione. Subito dopo ha inizio la processione: la statua di S.Michele, patrono del paese, viene portata a spalle dai fedeli per le vie di Rutino, accompagnata dalla batteria di fuochi pirotecnici. Terminato il percorso, il corteo si ferma in piazza; i portatori adagiano su di un tavolo la statua collocandola di fronte ad un palco che, nella rappresentazione teatrale che sta per cominciare, funge da Inferno. A questo punto l'Angelo inizia il suo volo. Assicurato tramite una cintura ad un cavo d’acciaio, teso a una decina di metri d'altezza tra il campanile e un balcone sul lato opposto della piazza, il bambino-angelo "vola", nel più assoluto silenzio, fino a metà del percorso, quando, d'un tratto, si ferma. Sotto di lui compare un diavolo vestito di nero e rosso, accompagnato da altri diavoli ribelli. Inizia uno scontro verbale, lungo e carico di tensione e, per i continui insulti del Diavolo, assume toni anche drammatici. Alla fine, dopo un duello simolico, l'Angelo sconfigge, colpendolo con la spada, il diavolo che, tra le imprecazioni, il fumo e i botti, scompare a testa in giù e ritorna all’inferno. VN

The Festival of the Angel's flight
In the second Sunday of May in Rutino (Salerno), the festival of the Angel’s Flight occurs. This ritual festival is characterized by a complex theatre performance that has as the main subject the fight between the Angel and the Devil. The angel is personified by a child who is chosen in relation to some special characteristics, as the weight, which has to be no more than 40 kilos, and the voice, which has to be acute and harmonious. In the festival day, the child wears a typical cloth: an embroidered white petticoat, a blue cloth adorned with golden threads embroideries and with a balance, symbol of justice, sewn on the breast, tights with blue strips, the wings, white sandals, the blond curly wig, the helmet and a shield on the left arm and, at last, the sword, given to the child-angel from two soldiers of the “Arma dei Carabinieri” in full uniform. Once the child-angel is ready, he goes to the church, where a ceremony is celebrated. Straight afterwards the procession starts: the San Michele’s statue, patron of the village, is carried on shoulders by the believers along the Rutino’s streets. Once the tour is over, the procession stops in the main square; the bearers put the statue down on a table just in front of the stage, which acts as the Hell in the performance that is about to start. That is the time when the angel starts his flight. Fastened with a belt to a steel rope that is tightened at a high of about ten meters between the bell tower and a balcony on the opposite side of the square, the child-angel flies, in the absolute silence, until he suddenly stops halfway. Underneath him, a black and red dressed devil appears; he is together with other devils. A very long and intense verbal fight starts. In the end, after a symbolic duel, the Angel defeats the Devil by beating him with the sword. The devil disappears with the head downwards and goes back to hell.
